Chocolate Memories

At the coast, 1975

Busy day today. Hospice delivered a wheelchair not an hour too soon. It is difficult to maneuver in the house though, and Dean was able to walk from the bathroom to the bed. But his footing was very unsure. He is coughing more and breathing has become more labored. Was willing to drink liquid protein three times today and some hot broth.

His special friend Paul brought him a triple espresso from his favorite drive-thru. He wanted a chocolate glazed donut, but alas there were none, only plain. Dean asked if I would give him a little icing in a spoon, I thought for the donut, but he stuck the spoon in his mouth. Then about gagged! He had to wash it down with hot coffee and told Paul it was awful, that chocolate was now just a memory.

Dean gave him instructions about some belongings and a couple things he was sorry he didn't get done on the house that maybe Paul could help me with later on. When he lamented again about Jonathan and I having to be up all hours, etc., I said that it was our privilege and that he would do the same or more for me. He replied, "That's different." Paul laughed as he knew he was going to say that. It is difficult to imagine your body being so depleted, needing carried and handled by others. They had a sweet visit.

He remains at peace and though he doesn't like this suffering, he is aware of the Lord's presence with him. His precious Kinsman Redeemer with Whom he has walked since the age of 19 and loves with all his heart.

A notary is coming out on Thursday so I can get the last couple of things signed and completed. And his daughter Debbie is coming from central Oregon for a short visit.

Hi my dear friend...
I just stopped back in and decided to let you know on this blog..that I have been keeping up with your posts.I know you don't have time to respond to my emails..but wanted you to know that my prayers are with you and your family.
It's such a comfort to know that you and Dean are trusting in the Lord while going through all of this.
I hope you and Jonathan are able to get some much needed rest too.

Love and hugs,
Valinda
