The Biopsy

The liver biopsy was scheduled for noon. The nurse told me he would be ready to go home in four hours. They were to give him a relaxant but no anesthetic, then use a long needle to extract some cells from the tumor in his liver. From this they would be able to tell what kind of cell's were there, where they came from.

I ran to the grocery and post office, home, gulped lunch and got back a little ahead of time just in case. After the four hours came and went, and the lights were being turned out, and the window closed, I called Jonathan who then called back to the hospital to inquire.

Shortly a nurse came out to get me and took me to be with Dean in recovery. He hadn't eaten since last evening and was complaining that they wouldn't give him anything. He gets jittery after this long a time. The nurse gave him some crackers and water. He asked for a sandwich, anything, but they said not yet. Finally we got home about 8 pm and I fixed him something to eat. He was to watch for blood in his stool or from the needle puncture site. His stomach was bloated, but he had no pain.
